There are 5 levels of swim officiating in Canada, as described here by Swim Ontario.  After starting at Level I, you are encouraged to “move up the ladder” through to higher level of officiating. We are proud to have many PICK officials at such higher levels!

Recommended PICK Official Training Pathway

The PICK Pathway program follows the Swim Ontario Officials Development guidelines. Timelines may vary for each individual.

Step 1:  Become a Certified Time Keeper – within 1 year of joining the Club

  • Complete the Introduction to Swimming Officiating Clinic.  No pre-requisites.  Minimum age 14.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Time Keeper – first time

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Time Keeper – second time/session.  Request Timer 1st evaluation and successfully receive sign off.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Time Keeper – third time/session.  Request Timer 2nd evaluation and successfully receive sign off.  You are now a Certified Time Keeper!

Step 2:  Become a Certified Judge of Strokes & Turns – within your 2nd year

  • Complete the Judge of Strokes & Turns Clinic.  Introduction to Swimming Officiating Clinic is a prerequisite. Minimum age 16.

  • If not already done, complete the Time keeper Certification (step 1 above).

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Head Lane Timer Judge of Strokes & Turns – first time.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Turn End Judge of Strokes & Turns – first time.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Judge of Strokes (side of the pool) – first time.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Head Lane Timer Judge of Strokes & Turns – second time.  Request Judge of Strokes & Turns 1st evaluation and successfully receive sign off.

  • Volunteer at a PICK Hosted Meet as a Turn End Judge of Strokes & Turns – or – as a Judge of Strokes (side of the pool) – second time.  Request Judge of Strokes & Turns 2nd evaluation and successfully receive sign off.  You are now a Certified Judge of Strokes & Turns!

Step 3:  Continue to move up

Many other positions are needed to run a successful meet, including Chief Timer, Clerk of Course, Starter, Chief Finish Judge, Chief Judge Electronics.  For detailed descriptions, please go to Swim Ontario Officials.
