Sykes sets records at Barrie Aquafest

Just a week after Benji Sykes (Boys, 2005) turned in a dominating performance at Pickering’s 2018 Sprint, the Gold group swimmer broke four Pickering Swim Club records while topping the podium in six of his seven events at the 2018 Aquafest in Barrie, Ont.

Benji’s records came in the 400m individual medley (5 minutes, 21.90 seconds), 200m freestyle (2:10.74), 50m backstroke (32.20) and 50m breaststroke (35.47).

Benji’s six gold medals were among 58 medals won by Pickering’s 44 entrants in the meet, which was open to swimmers with E or better qualifying times. Pickering’s other top medal winners were a pair of Benji’s Gold teammates: Leif Bouwman (Boys, 2004), who earned three gold and four silver medals; and Sam Fera (Boys, 2004), with three gold, one silver and three bronze finishes.

Pickering’s swimmers cut a total of 894.15 seconds off their best times at Aquafest, which was hosted by the Barrie Trojan Swim Club from November 2nd to 4th, 2018. Top time-off honours went to Ean Carta (90.12 seconds off), Benji (79.83) and Jesus Baylon (76.11).
